Derrick’s Journal: Week 2
As some of you know, my brother, Derrick, recently made some big changes in his life by moving to Tucson and adopting a raw food diet and healthier lifestlye. He is coming from a sedentary lifestyle, standard american junk diet, heaviness, and a history of other toxic habits. It’s been two weeks since he’s been here. Here is what he has to say:
“This past week I’ve been a lot more productive, and things are starting to move a little smoother. I started working out with Lee at a park near my place, usually just before sunset. That been very good for me because I can feel my heart pumping hard (can’t remember the last time I felt that).
Also I have been applying to a lot of restraunts, and I’m sure something will come through within the next few weeks.
The same salads and smoothies I was eating were getting kind of boring and I felt like I needed some new things with more sustenance. So a few new recipes I made were the walnut tacos and the nori rolls (with the same walnut meat!). Both had a mango habanero sauce that was so good I’ve now been making it every other day. Sweet and hot, awesome combo! Leaving sauces like that in the fridge overnight lets the flavors marinate and is even better the next few days.
That’s about all new that’s been going on this week, hopefully next week I’ll have some more new recipe ideas that I can share. Maybe even a job too..”
Picked this bad boy up for $2 on sale today at the market.
Derrick made this ‘sushi’ dish - Red pepper, white and green onion, carrots, cilantro and a walnut/zucchini spread with mango habanero sauce.
Walnut meat with taco seasoning, garlic, zucchini on a romaine leaf with tomato, cucumber, onion, avocado and a habañero mango sauce.
Introducing my bro to a cleansing green drink - lemon ginger blast - dandelion, kale, celery, cilantro, parsley, dill, golden beets, lemon, ginger, apple, jalapeño.
Q:I need a friend like you to go grocery shopping! :P Have a wonderful day!
Thanks! Let’s hit up the farmer’s market :)

Derrick’s Journal: Week 1
As some of you know, my brother, Derrick, recently made some big changes in his life by moving to Tucson and adopting a raw food diet. He is coming from a sedentary lifestyle, standard american junk diet, heaviness, and a history of other toxic habits. It’s been one week since he’s been here. Here is what he has to say:
“I arrived in Tucson last Friday and started the raw diet right away. Lee made me what is now my typical salad. Romaine, red leaf, onion, peppers, tomatoes, etc. Anything will work in a salad. What set it off was the dressing, that I found could be made in minutes with a good blender. My stapes for a dressing are garlic, jalapeno, cilantro, lime or lemon and tomatoes (the juice from the tomatoes gets it all flowing). No limits to the dressing, whatever I feel like.
The next morning he showed me how to make smoothies. I started making smoothies by juicing apples, oranges, pineapple, grapes… Again, whatever I felt like. Adding ice made it better- nice and cold. Then bananas and a few dates made it turn out great! Throughout the week those were standard meals for me.
Some great recipes Lee showed me were the coconut/basil sauce over “spaghetti” made from ribbons of cucumber and zucchini, with veggies added. That sauce was awesome, you gotta try making it!. Then the cauliflower wraps with dressing was tasty and satisfying.
As far as how I’m physically feeling, there were a few days where I had a slow start, felt tired, but as the day went on it was all good. I’m never starving either because I am eating plenty of nutrients to counter that. I’ve been doing pretty simple exercises like jumping jacks, push ups, crunches, stretching and shooting the b-ball around. I used to love basketball when I was a kid so I think that will be a key exercise for me.
This lifestyle is something I desperately needed and am gonna try my hardest to stay with it always. I know this is overplayed, but in all honest, if I can start this then anyone can.”
